Why No Action is Good for NCAA Wrestling

Don’t mess with the best wrestling tournament in America. Tom Brands, Cael and Cody Sanderson are among several people that have voiced eloquent reasons for not messing with the NCAA wrestling tournament. It looks like it’s safe at least until next year’s meeting.  Wrestlers perform differently in dual meetings vs. tournaments with tournaments bringing out the most ‘no holds barred’ version of a wrestler.  Why?  Because he’s not worried about giving up additional team points when facing superior competition.  Adding a team component would forever change the landscape of NCAA wrestling – and that’s NOT a good thing.

This is what the committee released today.

Wrestling Committee. The cabinet continued its discussion on adding a team component to the wrestling championship but did not take action. The cabinet expressed concern about an apparent lack of consensus nationally and a possible disconnect in communication between institutional coaches and administrators.
