Penn State Sophomore Zain Retherford was 33-3 last year wrestling as a true freshman. He took 5th place at NCAA’s, losing to Logan Stieber 7-3 in the semifinals and losing a very close match to Mitchell Port 3-1 (TB) in the consolation semi’s. It’s been widely speculated that Zain would redshirt this season for a couple of reasons: The team has had injury setbacks to expected starters (Alton Brothers) and maybe a lack of commitment at heavyweight and a likely 2 year redshirt by Nico Megaludis making a run at a 5th National Championship in a row unlikely. With a national Championship a real long shot why not load up for next year, keep Zain around for a 3-year run and he’d avoid facing Logan Stieber. Zain is a junior world champ; he’s not ducking Stieber. I’m sure the coaches are leading him to what’s best for the team. So everyone’s been speculating about what he and the coaches would decide, it’s a redshirt. But don’t tell anyone until PSU makes it official. Kade Moss is the front runner at 141 to replace him in the lineup. Lots of conjecture that the redshirt is me speculating. It’s not.
